Changi Airport Terminals: A Practical Guide

Short answer

Changi has four passenger terminals (T1-T4) plus Jewel. A free Skytrain links T1, T2 and T3; Terminal 4 is reached by a free shuttle bus from Terminal 2. Your terminal is printed on your boarding pass.

Changi Airport is easy to use once you know how its pieces fit together: four passenger terminals, a free train and shuttle network linking them, and Jewel sitting in the middle. Get the layout right and you save yourself a stressful dash; get it wrong - especially around Terminal 4 - and you can lose half an hour you did not plan for. Here is the practical version.

Four terminals, plus Jewel

Changi has four passenger terminals - Terminal 1, 2, 3 and 4 - and each handles a different mix of airlines. Jewel is not a terminal: it is the lifestyle complex of shops, dining and gardens that sits in the public area between Terminals 2 and 3, directly connected to Terminal 1. No flights depart from Jewel.

Terminals 1, 2 and 3 form one connected cluster you can move through without a shuttle. Terminal 4 is physically separate and is reached only by road, which is the single most important thing to know before you travel.

Which terminal is my flight?

Airlines are spread across the four terminals, and assignments change over time, so the reliable rule is simple: your terminal is printed on your boarding pass and your booking - always check it. As one fixed example, Scoot departures check in at Terminal 1. If you are being dropped off or meeting someone, confirm the terminal the day before, because arriving at the wrong one can mean a shuttle-bus detour to T4 or a Skytrain ride between T1, T2 and T3.

Moving between T1, T2 and T3

Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are joined by a free Skytrain that runs in both the public and transit areas. A hop between terminals takes only a few minutes, and the official guidance is to allow five to 10 minutes for a T1-T2-T3 transfer by train or on foot.

How Changi’s terminals connect.

There is one recent change to note. From 6 October 2026, the Skytrain between T1, T2 and T3 closes earlier - from 12:00am to 5:00am - for upgrading works, so in practice it runs roughly 5am to midnight. When the train is not running you are not stuck: in the public areas you use the link bridges (including the one at Jewel Level 3 between T1 and T2/T3), and in the transit areas you use the inter-terminal travellators. These walking routes are available 24/7, and a midnight loop shuttle also serves T4 overnight.

Getting to and from Terminal 4

Terminal 4 has no Skytrain. It is connected to the rest of the airport by a free shuttle bus in both the public and transit areas, and this is where travellers lose time if they have not planned for it.

  • Public (landside) shuttle: runs between T4 and T1/Jewel and between T4 and T2/MRT, taking about 10 minutes. From 6:00am to midnight it comes every 7-9 minutes (T1/Jewel) or about every 5 minutes (T2/MRT); overnight it switches to a loop roughly every 19 minutes.
  • Transit (airside) shuttle: runs about every 8 minutes all day. Allow roughly 19 minutes between T4 and T1, and about 12 minutes between T4 and T2 or T3.

If you are transferring to T4 airside without clearing immigration, your itinerary must be through-checked to your final destination; otherwise you clear immigration and use the public shuttle.

How much time to allow

As a rule of thumb from Changi’s own figures: five to 10 minutes between T1, T2 and T3, and 10 to 18 minutes to or from T4 (plus the wait). Those are travel times only - add your walk to the gate, security screening if you are changing airside zones, and a margin for queues. When in doubt, leave early; Changi is pleasant to wait in and stressful to run through.

Jewel is not a terminal

Jewel is the glass-domed complex famous for its indoor waterfall, gardens and hundreds of shops and eateries. It sits landside, in the public area between T2 and T3, and is linked directly into Terminal 1. From T2 or T3 it is a short walk across a link bridge.

The catch for connecting passengers: if you are transiting, you must clear arrival immigration to enter Singapore before you can visit Jewel, because it is outside the transit area. If you only have a short layover and do not want to enter Singapore, you stay airside and skip Jewel. With a longer layover and a visa-free entry, clearing immigration to see Jewel can be a better use of the time than sitting at the gate.

Getting to and from the airport

For the MRT, the Changi Airport station is on the East-West Line and is reachable on foot from Terminal 2 or Terminal 3. From Terminal 1 you walk or take the Skytrain to T2/T3; from Terminal 4 you take the free 24-hour shuttle bus to Terminal 2 and change to the train there.

Public buses stop at all terminals, but not every service covers T4: routes 24, 34, 36 and 110 serve all four terminals, while some others serve only T1-T3. Taxis, private-hire cars and airport coaches pick up at every terminal’s arrival level. If you are heading onward overland - say to Johor Bahru - plan the first leg from your arrival terminal; our guide to getting to JB from Singapore covers the options.

Terminal 5 is on the way

A fifth terminal is being built in the Changi East development. Based on official plans, Terminal 5 is expected to be operational around the mid-2030s, handling about 50 million passengers a year in its first phase - a big jump in Changi’s capacity. Its groundbreaking was in May 2025, and it will be connected to Terminal 2 via an underground automated people mover (plus its own MRT station), so it joins the existing airport rather than standing alone.

For now, that is future planning: the four-terminal layout in this guide stands for years yet, and nothing about T5 changes how you move around Changi today.

Quick questions

How do I know my terminal? It is on your boarding pass and booking - check it the night before, as assignments can change.

Is the Skytrain free, and when does it run? Yes, it is free between T1, T2 and T3, running roughly 5am to midnight after the October 2026 change; travellators and link bridges cover the rest of the night.

How do I get to Terminal 4? By free shuttle bus - about 10 minutes from T2 landside, or 12-19 minutes airside between T4 and the other terminals.

Which terminals have the MRT? The train station connects directly to T2 and T3; from T1 or T4 you walk or take a shuttle to reach it.

Can I visit Jewel while transiting? Only after clearing immigration into Singapore, since Jewel is landside between T2 and T3.
